About Homeschooling

Just a few of the books that sit on my shelf about how to be a better home educator:

The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook

Homeschool Your Child for Free: More Than 1,200 Smart, Effective, and Practical Resources for Home Education on the Internet and Beyond

The Unschooling Handbook : How to Use the Whole World As Your Child's Classroom

Teach Your Own: The John Holt Book of Homeschooling

How Children Fail (Classics in Child Development)

Books with Multiple Educational Topics:

I've been using the following series with my own son since the First Grade. By the end of each school year I make sure we have covered everything in the core knowledge books (below) for the grade he is in. I've been very pleased with this choice.

What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know: Preparing Your Child for a Lifetime of Learning (Core Knowledge Series)

What Your First Grader Needs to Know: Fundamentals of a Good First-Grade Education (The Core Knowledge Series)

What Your Second Grader Needs to Know: Fundamentals of a Good Second Grade Education Revised (The Core Knowledge Series)

What Your Third Grader Needs to Know (Revised Edition): Fundamentals of a Good Third-Grade Education (Core Knowledge Series)

What Your Fourth Grader Needs to Know: Fundamentals of A Good Fourth-Grade Education (The Core Knowledge Series)

What Your Fifth Grader Needs to Know, Revised Edition: Fundamentals of a Good Fifth-Grade Education (Core Knowledge Series)

What Your Sixth Grader Needs to Know (Revised) (The Core Knowledge)

Recommended Homeschool Books:

The greatest "book" I've found so far isn't really a book. It's a Kindle by Amazon. This reading device can be taken with you anywhere and holds about 1500 books - many available as a free download.

I personally think it's the coolest thing since sliced bread. It has so many great features.

It's very light weight and conveniently sized. Its a huge improvement over trying to lug around all the books you need for school. You can use it while waiting for anything from an airplane flight to seeing the doctor. And when you are tired of reading yourself, it will read to you. That is great practice for children learning to read or those wanting to improve their reading skills. You can change the font size for ease of use. You can even download the daily paper and read it on your Kindle.

It's the perfect gift to give a child of any age. And it's perfect for home schooling.

Be sure to visit the Homeschool Resources page for a list of locations that offer free downloadable books online. Most of them can be downloaded to your Kindle or to your computer desktop.
